Annexation upsets reader | Rocky Mount Telegram | Wednesday, October 01, 2008

Please tell me I'm having a nightmare!

I went to bed one evening and had a wonderful dream. My husband's company built a division in Roanoke Rapids. We got our dream of leaving Western New York fulfilled.

No more snow and crummy weather. Friendlier people and lower taxes.

We found a beautiful home in Rocky Mount in the Old Carriage Farm subdivision. A brand new home and low taxes. A neighborhood that is peaceful and has wonderful people in it.

We live in a place that makes you feel like you are out in the country, but just go out on the main roads and everything is there. The icing on the cake is the neighborhood is outside the city limits, and there are no city taxes. What more could one ask for?

Even in these bad economic times, it is a good move for us, and we are living better.

One day we receive a letter from the city of Rocky Mount. They want to annex our area and have us pay city taxes. What?! Please tell me I just had a brief nightmare!

I know that I am speaking for a great many of us. We don't want this!

No city taxes were the clincher for many of us when purchasing our homes. We have septic systems. Most of us do not care if we have sewers or want them.

The city comes through and puts in the system and then we have to pay out of our pockets to connect our home. I can't think of a good reason why I should pay for something that I don't want or need. In these economic times, who has the money to pay the extra taxes or come up with the money to pay to connect? Most of us are struggling with credit cards and mortgages. This will only help to put more families over the edge and into foreclosure. That means fewer homes bringing in the county taxes. Good move city council! We have a number of meetings for the different neighborhoods at the high school. Let us all band together and make all the meetings. We need our voices to be heard It's also election time.

That is another great way to let our government know what we want and what we will not put up with.
